Ramayan: Hanuman Glimpse of Rama & Burning Lanka (Chapter 5)

Hanuman’s First Glimpse of Shri Rama

Rama came near Rishyamook mountain. Sugriva lived on that mountain along with his ministers. Sugriva, fearing that Bali might have sent the two heroes to kill him, sent Hanuman in the form of a Brahmin to get information about Ram and Lakshman. When asked by Hanuman ji, Lakshman ji said that a demon named Danu told him that Vanararaj Sugriva can help us in finding Ravana who has kidnapped Sita Mata.

Hearing that Bali had not sent the two heroes, Hanuman ji made them friends with Sugriva. Sugriva consoled Rama that Sita ji would be found and he would help in finding her. Then Sugriva showed Ram ji the jewellery which Mother Sita had thrown down after seeing Sugriva. Due to which Ram ji became very sad.

Sugriva also told about the atrocities committed on him by his brother Bali. Ram ji consoled him. After killing Bali, Ram gave the kingdom of Kishkindha to Sugriva and the post of crown prince to Bali’s son Angad.

After attaining the kingdom, Sugriva indulged in luxury and the rainy and autumn seasons passed. Lakshman ji got very angry at him but Shri Ram ji calmed him down. Hanuman ji explained the reason for Lakshman ji’s anger to Sugriva and asked him to seek forgiveness from Ram ji.

Then Sugriva apologized to Ram Ji and sent his vanar army to search for Mother Sita. The vanar who went in search of Sita saw an ascetic in a cave. Tapaswini (ascetic) led the search party to the sea shore with the power of yoga where they met Sampati. Sampati told the monkeys that Ravana had kept Sita in Lanka Ashok Vatika. Jambavan encouraged Hanuman to cross the ocean.

Then on the orders of Sugriva, Hanuman ji agreed to go to Lanka. Then Ram ji gave his ring to Hanuman ji and said, If you show this ring to Sita, she will believe that you have come from me and she will be able to look at you without fear. Hanuman ji took the ring and bowed to Shri Rama and left for Lanka. On the way, Hanuman killed the shadow-catching demon. After crossing the sea, Hanuman ji stood on the peak of a mountain named Trikut and saw Lanka.

Hanuman ji met with Mata Sita

When Hanuman ji started to enter Lanka, Lankini stopped him, then he attacked Lankini and entered Lanka. Hanuman ji searched for Mother Sita in the whole of Lanka. When he did not find Mata Sita, he became very sad and worried. Then he went to Ashok Vatika to search for Mother Sita.

In Ashok Vatika, he saw Mother Sita who was very sad and then Ravana arrived there with his women. Ravana threatened Sita Mata and gave her two months’ time. After Ravana left, Hanuman ji used his Micro form and sitting on a leaf, narrated the qualities of Ram ji to Sita Mata so that Sita Mata did not get frightened and listened to him in full. Mother Sita fainted after seeing the monkey form of Hanumanji. Hanuman ji showed the ring given by Ram ji to Mother Sita.

Seeing that ring, Mother Sita was very happy and she believed that Hanuman ji is the messenger of Ram ji. Hanuman ji asked mata to come with him but she said that she would go only when Ram ji would take her away after killing the evil Ravana. Hanuman ji told Mother Sita to give me some sign of yours which I can show to Ram ji so that he can believe that I had met you. Mother Sita gave her Chudamani to Hanuman ji.

Lanka Dehan
Lanka is on Fire

When Ravana came to know that Hanuman had destroyed Ashok Vatika, he sent Chaityaprasada along with his demon army but Hanuman ji killed him. Similarly, Ravana sent Prahastha’s son Jambumali, the minister’s seven sons, his five generals and his son Aksh kumar, but Hanuman ji killed them all.

Then Meghnath tied Hanuman in a snake loop and took him to Ravana’s Darbar. In response to Ravana’s question, Hanuman introduced himself as the messenger of Ram. Vibhishana explained to Ravana that it was not at all right to kill the messenger. On hearing this, Ravana asked his demons to tie a cloth dipped in oil to Hanuman’s tail and set it on fire. On this Hanuman burnt the whole Lanka.
