Ramayan’s Darkest Hour: The Abduction of Sita Mata (Chapter 4)

To protect Mother Sita, Lakshman cut off Shurpanakha’s nose

During the exile Ram ji met with Shurpanakha. Shurpanakhaka expressed her desire to marry Ram ji. Shri Ram said that I am married, this is my beloved wife Sita. For women like you, living with a step-wife would be extremely painful. Hearing such words from Ram ji, Shurpanakha went to Lakshman and expressed her desire to marry Lakshman.

Lakshman

Laxman said mockingly, Beautiful lady with fair complexion like a red lotus!….. He said: I am just here to serve my elder brother Lord Shri Ram, why do you want to become my wife and slave? My elder brother is blessed with all the luxuries (or all the desired things). You become his little woman. With this all your wishes will be fulfilled and you will always be happy. Your are pure and worthy of them.

Hearing this, Shurpanakha went to kill Sita Mata, by seeing this Lakshman got angry and cut off Shurpanakha’s nose and ears. Shurpanakha sought help from Khar-Dushan and he came to fight with his army. In the battle, Ram killed Khar-Dushan and his army.

Shurpanakha went and complained to her brother Ravana. Then Ravana decided to abduct Sita with the advice of Akampanaki.

Jatayu’s Wings of Fire: A Defender’s Sacrifice for Love and Duty

Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, is known for abduction of Lord Ram’s wife Sita. It is a major event in the Sanatan epic Ramayan.

Ravana abducts Sita by disguising himself as his maternal uncle Marich. Marich took the form of a golden deer and attracted Sita. Sita Mata asked Ram to catch the deer, and when Ram ji went after the deer, Lakshman and Sita ji stayed in the hut and waited for him.

Marich was killed at the hands of Ram, but while dying, Marich imitated Ram and cried ‘Ha Lakshman’, ‘Ha Sita’, hearing which Sita, in fear, asked Lakshman to go to Ram. But Lakshman said that Ram ji has asked him to protect Mother Sita, so how can he violate the orders of Lord Ram ji.

Sita Mata

Sita Mata said that she will stay inside the hut but you go and see Shriraghunathji, he needs your help. Then Lakshman, after thinking, drew the Lakshman Rekha and asked Sita Mata not to come out.

Lakshman went to find Ram ji and Mother Sita started waiting for him. Then Ravana came in the form of a beggar and abduct Mother Sita by deceit. On the way, Jatayu fought with Ravana to save Sita Mother and Ravana killed him with a sword strike.

Ram Meets Shabri in the Forest

Ram became very sad after not finding Sita and started mourning. When he met Jatayu on the way, he told Ram about his plight and about Ravana taking away Sita towards the south. After telling all this, Jatayu sacrificed his life and Ram performed his last rites and proceeded inside the dense forest in search of Sita.

Ram ji set out towards inside the dense forest to find Mother Sita and on the way he touched Ahilyadevi with his feet and released her from the curse. This curse was given to her by her husband Gautam Rishi.

Ram ji saved Gandharva Kabandha, who had become a demon due to the curse of Durvasa, by killing him and went to Shabari’s ashram, where under the influence of Shabari’s devotion, he ate the false berries given by her. Thus Ram proceeded further inside the dense forest in search of Sita.
